More Sponsers and Artists on the website!

I've been buzzing along with the website. I've put all our wonderful Sponsors on the site and I've started adding Artists, contact information, artists statements and thumbnails of their work.

I've tightened up some design matters, and added our first item for sale - the wonderful Book of the Show.

I've added more information about the Artists' Reception, the Barbie Ball, the How to alter Barbie Workshops, as well as more details about the Galleries and Chatterbox, our producer! so be sure to check it out!!
We also now have a page that leads to all our downloads such as the E-vite, the Press Release and eventually all the forms the artists will need to drop off with their work!
I still have lots of plans, in addition to adding the rest of the artists, I hope to upload a piece of a video that's been submitted

The Book has arrived!

On Friday I picked up The Book from the printer.
It is Beautiful!
The Book highlights the Art from the early submitters and shows the incredible variety in the art for this year's show. Melissa Chow's work opens The Book off with a bang. Her images are so compelling. About this work she says:
"In this year’s green-themed altered Barbie, I am focussing on her wasteful and all-consuming nature. Ignoring the soaring prices of gasoline and oil, she stays true to everything she represents by inhaling the fumes instead of conserving and/or finding alternative sources of fun...what else would you expect of Barbie?"
Want to read more? BUY The BOOK and reserve your copy at the Altered Barbie website!

workshops comming up in august

there is more detailed info is available at alteredBarbie.com about the workshops coming up in August.

Here is a description of what the workshop will be:

In conjunction with the 5th Altered Barbie Show: Re-cycle and Re-use, local Hot Glue Expert, Charlotte Davis, will lead workshops @ "Barbie and Beyond". She will provide step by step instruction on how to alter a Barbie or Ken, make an environment, or decorate a Barbie object.

We will add or remove limbs; we will embellish, we will make fantastic creatures or beautiful icons. This is a chance to work on your relationship with Barbie, or just have a good time.

Charlotte Davis is an artist who has worked in many mediums*, primarily art jewelry and sculpture. She was a co-founder of The Soft Touch, a Haight Ashbury cooperative gallery which operated for more than 20 years.

About 10 years ago, a fellow artist showed her the fun of using a hot glue gun, found objects, and embellishments to make wild Easter Eggs and Xmas ornaments. This year, she was invited to transfer this skill into Altering Barbies.
She is looking forward to this new venue and what will emerge.

We will be signing people up online. once i get the kincks worked out with paypal shopping carts, we will be able to sign up for the Saturday workshops (August 4th and 11th) online and the Sunday (Aug 5th and 12th) workshops will be handled by SCRAP – Scroungers’ Center For Reusable Art Parts. ways in which we show our pain

from 2007 Jennifer Scaff King, entitled "New Years Eve"
this image really makes me want to cry. somehow it's right that barbie should be purging because her beauty standard helps send women over the edge to bingeing and purging and other self injurious behavior. the details of chocolates and so on in the room are really telling of the artist's intimacy with the subject.

heavy metal Kens

Where to get barbies?

Many artists are looking for Barbies and parts. The places I know to purchase used barbies on the cheap are thrift shops and garage sales. I think garage sales are great for accessories as well.

The next places to look is online at sites such as e-bay and Craig's list . These may be more expensive than thrift shops and garage sales due to shipping, etc.

Finally, to decorate and add wonderful re-used materials to your piece of art please check out SCRAP. SCRAP is a great resource for materials to decorate your barbie, on the cheap and is located on Toland St. in the bay Bayside area of San Francisco.

If you have any other resources please share.

Thanks, Julie Jill Andersen of ChatterBox
